That Sh*t Is No Longer My Sh*t!
My Moth StorySlam Reset Story
I love The Moth StorySlam. It’s truly the mecca of live storytelling—the original, the best-known, and ont of the most exhilarating storytelling event out there.
Every time I go, I try to have a story ready. You never know if your name will be called, but if it is, you want to be prepared.
When I saw that the theme for the night was RESET, I knew exactly what story from my past I wanted to tell.
So, I wrote my name on a little slip of paper, folded it up, and tossed it into the storytelling hat.
And then I waited.
Waiting for your name to be called at a Moth event is an emotional rollercoaster—exciting, nerve-wracking, slightly nauseating. 🥴 You want it so badly, but you also kind of don’t, because what if you forget your words? What if you completely blank? What if you gasp… bomb?
But then—my name was called. 😮💨

The Story I Told
I went up fifth that night and told the story of the time I got fired from a middling Discovery Channel show called Lord of the Flea… Markets.
It was a classic 20-something New York City moment: I was overworked, underappreciated, and convinced that if I just kept grinding, someone would finally recognize my value. Then, on my day off, my boss called me into the office under the pretense of a “staff meeting.”
🚨 Spoiler: There was no staff meeting.
Instead, I was fired. 🙃
Cue the full subway breakdown. Ugly crying. Spiral of self-doubt. Identity crisis.
But then, as I climbed the steps out of the Lorimer Street subway station, a ray of golden summer sunlight hit me square in the face, and suddenly, I had a moment of clarity.
That shit was no longer my shit.
The stress. The toxic work environment. The pressure to prove myself. None of it was mine anymore.
And with every step I took down the street, I felt lighter.
I even started humming a little song to myself:
🎶 That shit is no longer my shit… That shit is no longer my shit… 🎶
And you know what? Just a couple of weeks later, I landed a new job on an Bravo dating show planning intimate blind dates, plus a camera crew of 390. 😎
And since then, whenever I’ve been laid off, ended a toxic client relationship, or walked away from something that no longer served me, I’ve said those magic words:
That. Shit. Is. No. Longer. My. Shit. 👍
When a Story Resonates, You Feel It
Later that night, I knew this story had landed when the amazing Moth Host (and my story mentor) Corey Rosen read an anonymous audience story slip.
Someone had written:
"I think I’m about to get laid off this week… but after hearing that story, I feel way better about it. That shit is no longer my shit!"
HELL YES.
✨ That’s the magic of storytelling. ✨ It gives us a new way to see our own experiences, reframes our challenges, and reminds us that we’re not alone.
So, what’s your reset moment? 🤔
Find Your Own Reset Story
🔎 Here are some questions to get your own story wheels turning:
🔹 The Moment You Were Let Go (or Let Go of Something) – Tell me about a time you got fired, quit a job, ended a relationship, or walked away from something that no longer served you. What was the breaking point? How did you feel immediately after? What unexpected clarity came from it?
🔹 The Subway Cry (or Public Breakdown Moment) – Share a time when you completely lost it in public. What led up to that moment? What emotions spilled out? Looking back, what did that breakdown reveal about what you needed to release?
🔹 Your “Sunlight on the Stairs” Realization – Have you ever had a moment when something just clicked and you realized you didn’t have to care anymore? Where were you? What had just happened? What was the first thing you did differently once you embraced that truth?
Tell me in the comments, shoot me an email, or, better yet, go tell it on stage. 🔥
